It's fake.

Kinja'd!!!

The reason why Top Gear UK is so universally loved is not because of the cars, but because of the chemistry. Richard, James and Jeremy act so naturally around each other that it doesn't feel at all scripted or even planned at some points. They actually seem like friends just talking and having adventures. That's why even non car people love it.

Top Gear US feels so overly planned. It doesn't feel at all like they are actual friends, and it seems like every damn line is forced, scripted or both. Besides, they can't even come up with original challenges, jokes or lines.

And that is why your television has multiple channels, it gives you freedom to watch shows you want to and not watch shows you don't!

This is true. I do enjoy watching it from time to time but sometimes I can't even finish an episode. All the episodes are the same now anyway. Do some challenges, screw someone up each time, then whoever "wins" gets to drive a fancy car.

And that is why I call it Top Gear and not TGUK or Top Gear UK or whatever. It is the one and only true Top Gear.

I think TGUK is just as "fake" as TGUS. It is just the three Brits have been doing it longer, are better at faking the scripted stuff, and just get along better because they have been doing it for so long together.

it does feel forced in a way but TGUK is soooo fiction as well. Hosts are great, that's it though.

"Can it handle, let's find out (3 minute drift scene)" just boring to me.

TGUK: Ultra fiction, drift scenes and anit America is played out, high budget, good hosts

TGUS: Forced script, would be better if the hosts can be themselves, better than nothing

TGUK is fiction too, but it feels so less forced than TGUS, which makes it 10,000x better and easier to watch.

They're both fake as silicon boobs. It's just that one show's hosts are more entertaining than the other.

I don't hate Top Gear US, but I hate things about it. The problem is definitely sponsors. The TGUK is government funded, while TGUS is sponsored by things like Dr. Scholl's, and Biore Nose strips (or something, I only watch it on DVD). The guys seem to like each other, but they don't seem to be friends at all, just co-workers. Plus, it's just too short thanks to the fore mentioned sponsors.

Did you watch the classic hot hatch episode from the last series? Apparently not.

I don't how convincing they are has anything to do with it—you still know they are fake.

It's just that the UK version is better written (not that the show has good writing in the first place) and does better challenges.

The UK hosts have better script delivery—they recycle jokes and material, but it is still funny no matter how many times you hear it. This might be in part because they do get along in real life, which shows through the overly-scripted tv format or that they play the characters they represent on the show well. As journalists, they have to adopt personas so that a dumb audience will enjoy their writing.

I still think Seinfeld, Leno, and an awesome driver/younger guy would be a great mix.

The little I've seen of the US one is pretty sad. There's just no fun. The UK version is completely silly, but enjoyable for the host dynamics and that silliness.

The closest American show to this that I've seen is the YouTube-only "Roadkill" on the MT channel. It has a very SoCal social element, the hosts are clearly friends, and they approach everything from a very realistic American perspective (not some caricature of rednecks or something, like some awful "car shows" I've seen). These are the kind of people that burn up a cheap used Prius on a track trying to see what kind of performance they can wring out of it, compare an Aventador to a custom Rat Rod, and do insanely-long road trips in field-repaired Craigslist-acquired vehicles.

Agreed. I gave TGUS a fair shot watching 2 and a half seasons in their entirety and had no other choice but to give up. I found better use of my time alphabetizing M&Ms

whatever, TGUK is fake too. There's been real chemistry between the hosts the last two seasons.

Oh, and they aren't original? Bullshit. Show me the episode where TGUK took off-road vehicles to the Grand Canyon. Or how about the one where the Brits drove a logging truck through Washington State?

Have you even watched the show beyond the second season?

Wait don't answer that: I don't give a shit. Hate all you want, many of us enjoy the show and look forward to it every week. No one really cares about your opinion or mine, it's a TV program: watch it if you want to, don't if you don't

You should definitely try to find the earliest episodes where James wasn't even part of the show. Very clunky as they got started and their studio hangar looks freaking EMPTY with the small turnouts they were getting for filming episodes in those early days.

Even when James May came into the mix (Series 3 or 4 I think?) he was definitely the third wheel for a while and every other episode had a moment where you felt there was some Clarkson/Hammond private joke going on that he wasn't part of.

Maybe TGUSA will someday stop being maligned for the stepchild it is, but I doubt. Just know that TGUK wasn't always what it is now.

No, he is referring to new TG. The first series of "new" TG in 2002 had a guy called Jason Dawe instead of James May. May replaced him for the second series onward.
